Welcome to the City We Share

The Spray Park Committee comprises dedicated community members united in spearheading the revitalization of Wetaskiwin Recreation grounds. While our primary objective is to raise funds and construct a spray park, our broader aim is to cultivate a fully inclusive, family-centric park environment that enriches the lives of our city&#39;s residents. This encompasses the addition of diverse amenities such as an inclusive park, accessible fitness area, seating, a communal space for all ages, and eventual restroom facilities.<img src="https://s3.ca-central-1.amazonaws.com/ehq-production-canada/769c2f225f453a11d132f2c3cbc7d685e4a11357/original/1712092339/92ad2cb58913d1664806eb9ef7ce5776_2.jpg?1712092339" style="width: 556px;" class="fr-fic fr-dib">This initiative addresses a pressing need within our community. Despite Wetaskiwin&#39;s population of nearly 13,000 individuals, it stands as the sole eligible community in Alberta, within the 6,000 to 20,000 population range, without a spray park. Our city boasts a mosaic of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, yet currently offers limited opportunities for free, inclusive recreation &mdash; particularly for individuals with disabilities. This scarcity not only dampens enthusiasm for outdoor activities but also contributes to lower rates of physical activity. Additionally, there are very few outlets in our community for children with diverse abilities to engage in active play.<img src="https://s3.ca-central-1.amazonaws.com/ehq-production-canada/b8bdfbb6f13e464db94c09b87f42cb2fc9e6d352/original/1712093970/34c56550fcfec88321e249a5699fef29_3.jpg?1712093970" style="width: 605px;" class="fr-fic fr-dib">Recognizing the pivotal role of accessibility and recreation in fostering a healthy, thriving community, our committee is steadfast in the belief that nurturing family-oriented, community-driven spaces will cultivate a vibrant locale attractive to new families. In doing so, we anticipate positive economic ripple effects. The chosen design for the Wetaskiwin spray park is a recirculating system. This is a closed circuit system that reuses water from the play area, which is filtered and disinfected in the underground water containment system. Although this system has a higher capital cost, recirculating water systems allow for a more economical approach to water usage while also generating warmer-temperature water for users, as well as various other benefits.The Design:While the design is still an ongoing process, the Spray Park Committee is focused on creating a space that is accessible and inclusive for all. The quotes also reflect what our highest aspirations are for the project and are easily scaled back as final numbers come in. The projected budget as it stands would be roughly $1.2 million for the completed project at the high end. This project will be mainly funded by federal and provincial grants, community grants, community and capital donations, in-kind donations, sponsorships, and various fundraisers. Wetaskiwin Spray Park Project

<div class="OutlineElement Ltr SCXW250223068 BCX0">The City of Wetaskiwin is seeking feedback from Wetaskiwinites on the future of the BoardRider. </div><div class="OutlineElement Ltr SCXW250223068 BCX0">What is the BoardRider? The BoardRider is an indoor surf simulator at the <a href="https://manlukcentre.ca/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Manluk Centre: Regional Aquatics &amp; Fitness Centre</a>. When the Manluk Centre opened its doors in 2014, it was the first surf simulator in Western Canada. </div><div class="OutlineElement Ltr SCXW250223068 BCX0">What happened to the BoardRider? In 2020, the BoardRider was closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the holding tank where its turbines are housed, was drained. When the Manluk Centre was fully reopened in 2022, the turbines would not start. An engineer from <a href="https://www.murphyswaves.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Murphy&rsquo;s Waves</a> inspected the unit and was unsuccessful in getting the BoardRider operational, confirming that the turbines were fully seized. In <a href="https://wetaskiwin.civicweb.net/Portal/MeetingInformation.aspx?Org=Cal&Id=540" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">June 2023</a>, City Council directed Administration to investigate repair or replacement options for the BoardRider. </div><div class="OutlineElement Ltr SCXW250223068 BCX0">What are our options? This survey is intended to inform Administration which operational business case the community would like presented to Council during the budget deliberation process.<div class="OutlineElement Ltr SCXW250223068 BCX0">Deadline for feedback City Council directed Administration to conduct a community survey ahead of the 2025 budget cycle. The survey will be open until Friday, May 31, 2024. After the results have been gathered, they will be presented to City Council in a report at a June 2024 regular meeting. </div>
